“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
At the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling, WV, we see firsthand how deeply food insecurity impacts our community. One of the fastest-growing groups in need of food assistance is seniors. Our neighbors, grandparents, and lifelong community members now face impossible choices every day.
Growing Need Among Seniors
The Food Pantry at the House of the Carpenter is serving an ever-increasing number of seniors. The reasons are many. In recent years, more seniors have fallen below the poverty line. Currently, 15% of all seniors live below the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
The often-quoted choice between “food or medicine” is not just a phrase. It is the reality seniors face. Even more heartbreaking, over 50% of seniors in West Virginia are the primary caregivers for grandchildren. Imagine trying to stretch a limited grocery budget to feed yourself and two growing children. Many are afraid to seek assistance because they fear their grandchildren might be taken from their care.
How We Are Helping
Through our Food Pantry, the House of the Carpenter provides:
Senior Supplement Shakes: Available to every senior who comes to the pantry. Some use them as meal replacements, others as a supplement. Either way, they provide critical nutrition.
Senior Food Boxes: In partnership with the Mountaineer Food Bank, the House of the Carpenter receives only 30 boxes per month. Each box weighs over 35 pounds and is distributed to senior high-rise residents who often face limited transportation.
How You Can Help
The need is great. Senior Supplements cost just $11 for six shakes per senior. Right now, we anticipate 50 or more seniors each month who depend on this program for nutrition.
You can help by making a donation to the House of the Carpenter Food Pantry and designating your gift to the senior supplement program.

Together, We Can Make a Difference
At the House of the Carpenter, we believe no one, especially our seniors, should have to choose between food, medicine, or family care. Your support allows us to carry each other’s burdens and extend Christ’s compassion in practical ways.
Together, we can ensure our seniors in the Upper Ohio Valley receive the nutrition, dignity, and care they deserve.
