Each weekend throughout the school year, the House of the Carpenter provides all 280 students at Madison Elementary on Wheeling Island with food. The weekend backpacks include a total of six meals – two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners – snacks, and three pieces of fruit each week. The J. B. Chambers Foundation provides the majority of the funds for this ministry, but it is supported by a variety of other groups as well. Generally, it costs a little over $3.50 to feed a child for a weekend. Volunteers from local congregations, businesses, school groups, and civic groups pack the backpacks each week before they are taken to the school and distributed by the teachers.
